The Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) is one of eight institutes of the University of Amsterdam Faculty of Science. HIMS performs internationally recognized chemistry and molecular research, curiosity driven as well as application driven. This is done in close cooperation with the chemical, flavour & food, medical and high-tech industries. Research is organised into four themes: Sustainable Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Computational Chemistry and Molecular Photonics.

The Bionanophotonics, which is part of HIMS, is looking for a talented researcher to join a challenging project on application of nanotechnology in biomedicine, as detailed below. Selection will be based on his/her suitability to the project. The successful candidate will be appointed as PhD candidate in a fixed-term contract.

Project description
The project ‘Preclinical intraoperative image-guided surgery and postoperative radiotherapy of tumours’ is a joint project of UvA and Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) that is funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research under New Chemical Innovations programme. We aim at developing methods of bioorthogonal chemistry on luminescence upconversion nanoplatforms in vivo that will allow image-guided surgery and targeted radiotherapy of cancer.

Requirements
The candidates must have a MSc degree in chemistry or chemical engineering, with a strong background of organic/inorganic synthetic and biofunctionalization of nanomaterials and excellent communication skills in English. Candidates with proven experience in the areas described above are preferred.
